Byredo vs Diptyque: Two Ways of Writing a Fragrance Compared

Choosing between Byredo and Diptyque is less about which is better and more about which language you like to hear: one tells stories of memory and travel in a clean, minimal line, the other has spent decades extending a Parisian tradition of gardens, leaves and woods. Here is how to read them side by side, without a ranking.

TL;DR

  • Diptyque began in Paris in 1961; Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006.
  • Diptyque leans botanical: fig, leaf, wood. Byredo leans toward memory and smooth, clean material.
  • Two design languages: a Paris atelier of artists on one side, Nordic minimalism on the other.
  • The right choice depends on your skin, your rhythm and what you want to evoke, not on a hierarchy.
  • There is a third path: fragrances composed slowly, in note families, in Madrid.

Two origins, two geographies

Diptyque opened in 1961 at 34 boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, founded by three friends from the worlds of art and decoration. The house started with fabrics and objects before moving to candles and then fragrance. That atelier origin explains a lot: a taste for drawing, for the recognisable oval label, for an imagination of travel without leaving the room.

Byredo is far younger. Founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, it was built around the idea that a fragrance is above all a memory, a place, a moment. Where Diptyque has heritage, Byredo has the clarity of a contemporary vocabulary, often very graphic.

Two olfactory handwritings

At Diptyque, the botanical dominates: Philosykos with its whole fig tree (leaf, wood, fruit), L'Ombre dans l'Eau with blackcurrant leaf, Do Son with white tuberose, Tam Dao with sandalwood. You can smell the garden, the stem, the sap. It is a handwriting that loves green, creamy and woody tones, with a certain natural roughness.

At Byredo, compositions tend to be smoother, more powdery or more amber, with names that evoke places and memories: Gypsy Water, Bal d'Afrique, Blanche, Mojave Ghost. The writing is often more transparent and architectural, designed to be worn like skin.

Longevity and sillage: what can honestly be said

How long a fragrance lasts depends on concentration, skin, season and even humidity. There is no universal verdict between these two houses, and each reference behaves differently. A simple habit: wear it on skin, let it evolve for six hours, then return to it the next day with a fresh mind. The base notes tell you the truth of a fragrance far more than the opening.

To learn to read those stages, our piece on vanilla and what Guerlain teaches us about the note shows how a single note travels through the hours.

Which world for which person?

If you love herbariums, stone terraces, a crushed leaf between the fingers, Diptyque will speak to you. If you prefer soft materials, the memory of a faraway journey, a restrained bottle and a composition that fades rather than imposes itself, Byredo may sit closer to your sensibility.

Many people alternate between the two with the seasons: green fig for late summer, a powdery amber for autumn. That is not disloyalty, it is an olfactory wardrobe. To continue exploring woody and amber families, read our reading of taste for amber and wood.

How to choose without regret

  1. Identify the family that draws you: green, white floral, amber, woody.
  2. Try a sample or small format before buying a large bottle.
  3. Wear it three days in a row, at different times.
  4. Note how it feels at hour six, not in the first minute.

This method works for any house. It also shows why fragrance is discovered slowly, as we explain in our article on method and numbered names.

A third path: Maison Voyageur

Maison Voyageur is a Mediterranean parfumerie: seven eaux de parfum composed slowly in Madrid, around the idea that real luxury is time to explore within yourself. Each fragrance has its own character and is meant to be discovered on its own terms. The Discovery Set lets you wear them one by one, a fragrance a day.
